The Friday Traveller’s Photo Feature – Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Hello friends, I’m excited to announce a new weekly photo feature I’m starting.  One of the things I enjoy the most about traveling is the opportunity to capture amazing moments and destinations which I can then share with friends and readers.  It’s easy for travel photographs to get overlooked and buried deep in the albums associated with where they were taken.  To help highlight some of my favorite photos from over the years, I’m going to dig down into my travel photo galleries/album archives and post a favorite shot to feature every Friday as part of my new Friday Traveller’s Photo Feature.  These are shots I’ve taken over the years on my Canon G11, Canon G6, and Canon G2 during my hostel and backpacking themed trips across the world.

This weeks photograph is one of my absolute favorites from Plitvice Lakes in central Croatia.  These lakes and stunning waterfalls are located in the heart of one of Europe’s finest UNESCO World Heritage sites.   I snapped this photo the day before the year’s first snow.  While the park can be overcrowded in the summers, I visited it in late October and found it nearly deserted. It was truly magical wandering along the rustic raised wooden boardwalks surrounded by large schools of fish, stunning blue water and captivating waterfalls.  The fall yellows, golds, and reds added to the natural greens you’ll typically see in photos from Plitvice.

I am a travel blogger and photographer. I also am involved in academic research into the study abroad and backpacker communities.

    1. Thanks Aisleen. It was definitely a surprise. I had no idea about it until some of the people in the hostel insisted I check it out. Boy was I lucky I listened, otherwise I was schedule to blaze right by it by bus on my way from Zagreb to Split.

    1. Thanks! I hesitate to call it hiking, but it does require a long walk. There are small ferries that take you across the lakes in various areas. Beyond that you spend most of the 4-8 hour trail walking along mostly flat terrain. Though the path can (and does) cut up to the top of the canyon in several places which is a little more involved. If you look at the national park website: http://www.np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=71&Itemid=85 you can see several different options. When I was there they also operated a shuttle (which is what we took) which went from the far end of the lakes back down to the main entrance.

  1. This looks like an amazing place. It is on my radar (with the rest of Croatia) as a spot that we might try to hit later this summer…any tips for other places that we should make sure that we hit in Croatia?

    1. You can glance through my old posts. I think things have changed a bit since I was there as it has continued to grow as a major tourist destination. It also depends on time of year because many of the towns can be completely inundated by tourists (same with the lakes). Late summer is probably ideal. Though the beaches would of course be best during warmer months. Renting a car on one of the islands to explore it is fun. We did Brac. I really enjoyed the old city of Split because of it’s tiny winding streets. Zagreb is better than people expect, if still not a vibrant city full of things to do. Worth giving it a day to explore it a bit.
