A Bridge in Ghent – Weekly Travel Photo

Exploring Belgium

There is a magical charm to walking historic European cities in the crisp cool air of a fall evening.  While wandering the historic center of the Belgian city of Ghent, I found myself pausing beside the intricate patterns of carefully laid cobblestones, wrought iron railings, and gorgeous historic buildings atop one of the city’s many bridges.  As I paused enjoying the sight of the moon slowly crawling its way through the sky above the beautifully lit silhouette of the Saint Nicholas’ Church and Belfry of Ghent, I heard the clip-clop of women’s heels colliding with cobblestones. A moment later I felt the light stirring of air as a passerby made her way around me and into the photograph of the bridge I’d previously been about to take.  A moment later I snapped this shot. Have you been to Ghent?  The city is world famous for the way it is lit at night and with good reason.  Beautiful by day, the city is absolutely splendid in the evening.

The Busy Bosphorus – Weekly Travel Photo

Waiting Ships at Sunset - Istanbul, Turkey

The Bosphorus has served as one of the world’s great maritime thoroughfares for thousands of years.  One aspect of Istanbul that always captures my imagination and fascinates me is the long cue as ships rest moored at the mouth to the channel while awaiting the green light to pass through the heart of the city.  This photo was captured at sunset from the Kadikoy ferry as we left behind the docks of Istanbul’s Asian side and steamed across the Bosphorus, ducking and dodging large tankers and cargo vessels, back to the European side where our hostel was located.

A Wheelbarrow Full of Flowers – Friday’s Weekly Travel Photo

Assisi's Beautiful Streets

I captured this photo just before sunset along a side street in the Italian town of Assisi which is located on a small mountain amidst the rolling fields of the rich Italian countryside.  The winding streets of Assisi are delightful and full of small highlights like this wheel barrow.  While the stone facades of the tightly packed ancient homes that line the streets are somewhat uniform most are decorated with vibrantly colored flower pots.  The golden hue of the day’s last night worked to bring out the reds and golds in the stone and wood, casting everything in a warm twilight glow.  I hope you enjoy this shot!
